Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Visual Effects Model Maker - Sled

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Main Page.

Future General was working on ShowScan or a predecessor. They built a full size one man space craft set. David Jones started a model on his own time, but never finished it. When we started the Series Buck Rogers, the first we heard was, "You're behind already!" As a short cut, Dave brought this partially built model in and put Vance Frederick to work finishing it - but not like the original full size set. I can't remember where the model was first used, but do remember watching a finished episode as it was broadcast and seeing that the editors used this model in place of another model that they did not have enough shots of in time.

About mid way through the first season (Olympiad), we needed a full size two-person space craft - the AstroSled. Since the ShowScan ship hadn't been seen by many people, we bought the set. Then we needed a matching model. So Ken Larson built a model, much like the original, but a few scale feet longer to accommodate the second person. This model was not to scale with the "larger" Thunder Fighter (Star Fighter) model and at one point, we needed the two attached as Buck came to the rescue. So Ken built another, smaller, bottom only model to attach to the Thunder Fighter.

Shown here is the Sled completed by Vance.
