About mid way through the first season, for Olympiad, the story needed a full size two-person space craft - the AstroSled. The show bought a one-person space craft set that was originally built for ShowScan. This was lengthened by one seat by the Universal Prop Shop or Mill. Then Hartland needed a matching model. So Kenneth Larson built a model, much like the original Sled, but a few scale feet longer to accommodate the second person. This model was not to scale with the "larger" Thunder Fighter (Star Fighter) model and at one point, the story needed the two attached as Buck came to the rescue. So Ken built another, smaller, bottom only model to physically attach to the Thunder Fighter. Usually we painted the models flat colors to reduce "blue spill" which is the reflection of blue screen light on the model, causing those areas of the model to be unintentionally matted out. For this one model, Hartland wanted reflections. Ken covered it with reflective metallic film. It required extra care in lighting to show the reflections with out blue spill. In the screening room, it looked beautiful as if slid into a turn with a glint of sunlight sliding across the length of the model. In the final edited episode, only for first three seconds were used, the three seconds before the reflection started. |
