The basic design for the Zadd Battle Cruiser came from an athletic stadium in Canada. It began with an elliptical sheet of plastic with an armature bolted on. Then many pieces of colored plastic were cut to irregular shapes and glued to the elliptical disk. Once that was done, we added a number of small light bulbs. Over this was placed the vac-u-formed domes which were frosted. The jagged lines were added to the domes. For the "cow head," I carved a wooden buck which was molded and cast in fiberglass and attached to the armature. There are stories of why we inverted the model frm the orientation of the sports stadium. The real reason was as the model was almost finished in the paint shop, if fell off its mount and cracked the dome that was to be the primary camera side. Since there was no time for repairs, we flipped it over and the undamaged side became the prime side. When you are making enough Visual Effects shots to fill a feature every three weeks (and Galactica 1980 and Cheech and Chong's Next Movie at the same time), you do what you gotta do.
